Public Talk: Mobile Computing and Mobile Application Development
With the proliferation of the iPhone and Android-powered hand phones, mobile computing will be an exciting field in the years to come. We are proud to present this public talk on mobile computing and mobile application development. This public talk features two presentations which cover the state-of-the-art of mobile computing from both the academic and the industrial perspective. The two speakers are Dr. Henry B. L. Duh from National University of Singapore, and Chris Ismael from Microsoft Singapore. You are welcome to join us in this talk. Refreshments will be served after the talk. This event is organized by IEEE GOLD Singapore and is co-sponsored by IEEE Computer Society Singapore chapter.
Date/Time: September 15, 2010 Wednesday, 6:15 PM
Venue: Lecture theatre LT3, NUS

About the talk:

Mobile User Experience Design – Creating Usable and Innovative Mobile Interactive System

Abstract: Mobile Human-Computer Interaction (Mobile HCI) is one of the most prevailing research areas across disciplines in recent years. A good research in the area requires not only understanding of users’ information processing capability and their behaviors, but also familiarity of limitations and specifications of new innovative systems. Ideally, it is better to have a team with engineers, designers and social scientists working together for Mobile HCI studies. However, it is not an easy practice. The purpose of the presentation is to explore how to conduct multidisciplinary research for innovative mobile media and applications. The first part introduces efforts in developing interdisciplinary interactive and digital media research in Singapore. The second part exhibits some of the presenter’s published work to illustrate new mobile interaction services and applications to synergize engineering and behavioral science research for interactive system design such as mobile augmented reality games.
About the speaker: Dr. Duh is the deputy director (research) of KEIO-NUS CUTE centre and, a joint faculty member in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Interactive and Digital Media Institute at National University of Singapore. He received his degrees in psychology, design and engineering respectively. After finishing his PhD, he went to NASA-Johnson Space Centre as a postdoctoral fellow involving in virtual reality training project. Dr. Duh is a Senior Member of both ACM and IEEE, the Singapore Representative of the International Federation of Information Processing Technical Committee on Human- Computer Interaction (IFIP TC13: HCI) and the Chairman of the ACM Singapore Chapter. He is the Associate Editor of ACM Entertainment in Computer and published more than 60 conference and journal papers in HCI area.  His current research focuses on user experience, interaction design, and gaming effects in mobile systems. Dr. Duh is a private pilot and certified advanced ground instructor by the FAA.
About the talk: Introduction to Microsoft Windows phone 7
Abstract: Windows Phone 7, (the completely new mobile OS from Microsoft) provides whole new set of opportunities for mobile developers and consumers. Join us for a session on introduction to Windows Phone 7, its new features and how to get started with writing apps for the phone
About the Speaker: Chris Ismael works as a Developer Evangelist in Microsoft Singapore.  His work has taken him to various developer communities and speaking engagements both in Singapore and abroad, with topics ranging from Office development and file formats, LAMP/Interop technologies, Live Services, Windows 7 development, and now Windows Phone.  He also ran the Microsoft startup program called BizSpark in Singapore for 2 years.  He has 6 years of experience in web development prior to working in Microsoft.
