Abstract:
Rachel briefly introduced Nature and Nature physical sciences research journals, and took all the participants through the manuscript preparation and submission processes, as well as the overview of the editorial process and the peer-review system of Nature journals. An introduction to Nature Photonics was given. At the end of the talk, everyone was able to understand what editors generally seek for, how to write a good cover letter and manuscript, what happens to your manuscript after submission, how to review a manuscript and how to make an appeal.

Biography of Speaker:
Before joining Nature Photonics, Rachel worked for Aston University's Business Partnership Unit in Birmingham, UK, as a research commercialization officer commercializing research output of the university, particularly that of photonics research. She obtained her PhD in microwave photonics and nonlinear optics as a member of Aston's Photonics Research Group. Prior to that, she worked for Philips Optical Storage in Singapore as an Optics Engineer. She holds a Master's degree from Nanyang Technological University of Singapore doing research in optical fibre sensing and a Bachelor's degree from the National University of Malaysia.

This talk was an indeed another successful event and the turn up rate was pretty good even though the talk was scheduled on Sunday. Dr. Rachel Pei Chin Won was the associate editor for Nature Photonics, which is one of the publications in Nature Publishing Group (NPG). It is a scientific journal publishing original research related to optoelectronics, laser science, imaging, communications and other areas of photonics. The journal was launched in January 2007, but the impact factor has been increased to 24.982 within the two years! During the talk, Rachel introduced the whole editorial process and the peer-review system of Nature journals. She also talked manuscript preparation / submission procedures and how to prepare a good cover letter, which was usually ignored by authors when submitting papers. The talk was really interesting, inspiring and useful.

Below are some of the pictures taken during the event.
